Parents and teachers have a common goal: a successful school year for every child. Your children are more likely to be successful in school if you are able to work with their teacher.
Here are some ways to develop a successful working relationship with your childs teacher:
1. Introduce yourself to the teacher as early in the school year as possible. Teachers are back to school before the children and this might be a good time to call and arrange a 10 minute meeting. If you cant meet face to face, send a note, an email, or arrange a phone appointment.
2. Dont wait for problems to surface to establish a relationship with your childs teacher. Problems will be dealt with more efficiently and effectively if the teacher knows who you are.
3. Speak positively about school in general and about your childs teacher, especially in your childs presence. Dont blame or criticize the teacher; that cant possibly be helpful.
4. Schedule an appointment with the teacher as soon as you have a concern or complaint. Dont make your child the messenger; deal with the teacher directly. Dont jump to conclusions before or during your meeting. Follow the chain of command. Dont speak to the principal until youve first spoken to the teacher.
5. Be respectful. Teachers are trained professionals. It is a given that not all teachers (nor parents for that matter) are cut out for the job. That aside, most teachers are dedicated, caring, and want to be good teachers.
6. Say thank-you. Everyone likes to be appreciated and teachers are no exception. Look for opportunities to say thank you it costs little and the rewards for the teacher are huge. Sending a note or leaving a message on the school answering machine after hours will brighten any teachers day.
Your childs teacher is an important ally and useful resource when it comes to raising your child. Go for the we attitude instead of the me attitude and work with your child's teacher to help your child have a great school year
